Google unveiled this novel concept in 2014 and like the name suggests amazingly is literally just a folded cardboard container that acts as a holder for a mobile headset.
Costing next to nothing, the genius of the design is that it is intended to be accessible/universal (i.e. not hardware specific) and due to its sheer simplicity opens up the VR experience to millions of people who ordinarily might be daunted by the prospect of purchasing concepts they do not quite understand.
Somewhat aptly; Google Cardboard also happens to be the official the name of the VR platform that is being developed by Google.
Simplicity and maximum affordability is inherent in its design so there is none of the ergonomic considerations that other designs need to incorporate to appeal to the wider market.
Absent is a head strap, inbuilt accessories or easy lens adjustment, Google cardboard is simply held up to the face to view VR content.
If you are interested in sampling VR just to see what all the hype is about then cardboard makes perfect sense as a place to start.
